It is not tied to any single rules engine: groups play it using their preferred TTRPG rules system, or with the optional 2d6 Resolution Bridge included on the site, which requires no separate rulebook. The current era is 7202 Post Sundering. The world combines flintlock navies, early airship fleets, colonial rivalry across a warm archipelago, and a science-fiction spine hidden beneath an age of faith and sail. Fortera, Éterlumin, anomalies, and apparent miracles are not separate mysteries. They are local expressions of one physical reality that priests, engineers, and scholars each read through a different tradition. The Golden Sea, called Mar de Oro, sits between greater continents: close enough to tempt every power, far enough to let secrets fester. Seven continental powers press their weight into the region. The Duchy of Heller is an autonomous Duchy within Valdegracia, with substantial internal authority and a distinct fleet and engineering culture, but it is not an independent continental power. Together the seven powers and Heller form eight major engineering traditions. The setting treats colonial power, exploitation, resistance, and institutional failure as consequential forces with real human weight. It presents these forces honestly and does not impose one mandatory moral conclusion on the table. Characters may serve a crown, company, church, colonial administration, local community, independence movement, or no recognised authority at all. Groups are expected to agree together on the prominence and tone of these subjects before beginning. Mar de Oro is a flintlock fantasy setting, a naval TTRPG setting, an airship TTRPG setting, and a colonial fantasy TTRPG setting. Campaigns can be run as age-of-sail privateers, sky-frigate crews, colonial investigators, chartered-company operators, or religious prodigies. The tone is sea, sky, faith, and empire. ## The three promises 1. Everyone is partly right. Priests, engineers, and scholars each read a fragment of the same deep reality. 2. The world pushes back. Éterlumin degrades, calibration buys time, factions remember debts, and every choice carries a cost. 3. Something lies underneath. What appears miraculous still obeys rules. The people of Aeon have discovered fragments of those rules, but no one has yet assembled the whole pattern. ================================================================ # CORE CONCEPT ENTRIES ================================================================ ================================================================ Title: Fortera URL: https://www.mar-de-oro.com/fortera Section: Core concept Audience: Everyone Spoilers: Light ================================================================ Fortera is the underlying field of the setting: a single force that priests read as divine presence, engineers read as a workable medium, and scholars read as a phase of matter. Rites, airship lift, signal engines, prodigies, and moon-pressure are all local expressions of the same Fortera field. It is not "magic" in the class-and-spell sense, and it is not a scientific power source. Fortera behaves consistently, but its patterns are only partly mapped, and different traditions describe it in their own terms without any of them being wholly wrong. Read the full page: https://www.mar-de-oro.com/fortera ================================================================ Title: Éterlumin URL: https://www.mar-de-oro.com/eterlumin Section: Core concept Audience: Everyone Spoilers: Light ================================================================ Éterlumin is Fortera made partly visible and material: a luminous, responsive substance most prized for airship lift and signal engines. Éterlumin is not poisonous, but it can displace breathable air in confined spaces, and it is dangerous through pressure, activation, degradation, instability, heat, resonance, fire, and rupture. It must be extracted, refined, contained, calibrated, and maintained. It degrades over time and becomes especially hazardous during relevant moon-pressure conditions. Éterlumin is not an unlimited energy source, is not a modern battery, and is not a poison or toxic miasma. The complete published hazard behaviour lives in the canonical dossier. Read the full page: https://www.mar-de-oro.com/eterlumin ================================================================ Title: Airships URL: https://www.mar-de-oro.com/world/airship-ttrpg-setting Section: Core concept Audience: Everyone Spoilers: None ================================================================ Airships in Mar de Oro are Éterlumin-lifted vessels crewed like naval ships: they need pilots, engineers, riggers, gunners, quartermasters, and signal officers. Lift is bought with fuel, calibration, and skilled labour; it is never free. Airships extend the reach of navies, chartered companies, and colonial administrations, but they do not remove weather, maintenance, or human decision from the picture. The full campaign-frame primer for airship play, with vessel classes and worked examples, lives on the site. Read the full page: https://www.mar-de-oro.com/world/airship-ttrpg-setting ================================================================ Title: Sky-keels and vessel design URL: https://www.mar-de-oro.com/codex/system-neutral-adaptation Section: Core concept Audience: Everyone Spoilers: Light ================================================================ Sky-keels are the load-bearing structural members that carry an airship's lift chambers and translate Éterlumin-borne pressure into flight. Vessel design in Mar de Oro is neither pure fantasy nor modern aeronautics: ships are built from timber, brass, tuned Fortera components, calibrated Éterlumin chambers, and the labour of specialised trades. Different national traditions favour different keel geometries, chamber configurations, and boarding doctrines. The full illustrated vessel material, including national engineering traditions, is on the site. Read the full page: https://www.mar-de-oro.com/codex/system-neutral-adaptation ================================================================ Title: The Dragon Line URL: https://www.mar-de-oro.com/world/dragon-line Section: Core concept Audience: Everyone Spoilers: Light ================================================================ The Dragon Line belongs to the Duchy of Heller. It is a permanent communication network built from hill towers, headland shutter stations, outer reef pylons, receiving offices, and shipboard signal-posts tuned to the resonance of Fortera. The Dragon Line transmits counted instructions, not spoken voices, and it is not a radio. Shipboard signal-posts require access to prepared reef pylons and other network infrastructure to place a message into the permanent line. Paired dispatch boxes are a separate system where the canonical page states this: they are not part of the permanent Dragon Line and should not be confused with it. Weather, damaged stations, countersigns, and relay procedure all affect whether a message arrives, and in what condition. Read the full page: https://www.mar-de-oro.com/world/dragon-line ================================================================ Title: Moon-pressure and moon-nights URL: https://www.mar-de-oro.com/calendar Section: Core concept Audience: Everyone Spoilers: Light ================================================================ Aeon has three moons, Umbra, Sirulena, and Veles, whose combined cycles rule the calendar and the tides that press on Fortera. Moon-nights are cyclical windows during which Éterlumin becomes hazardous and the sea grows restless. The site's interactive Calendar of Aeon plots the year's notable nights and the working tidal readings for representative coasts. Read the full page: https://www.mar-de-oro.com/calendar ================================================================ Title: The Sundering URL: https://www.mar-de-oro.com/glossary/sundering Section: Core concept Audience: Everyone Spoilers: Light ================================================================ The Sundering is the great reckoning that reshaped the world and reset the calendar to year zero. The current era is counted forward from that break in years Post Sundering. The Sundering is what makes 7202 P.S. matter as a date: entire civilizations have risen and failed inside its aftermath, and Aeon still speaks of itself with a calendar built on a wound. Read the full page: https://www.mar-de-oro.com/glossary/sundering ================================================================ Title: The Golden Sea (Mar de Oro) URL: https://www.mar-de-oro.com/world Section: Core concept Audience: Everyone Spoilers: None ================================================================ The Golden Sea, called Mar de Oro, is a warm archipelago between greater continents. It is close enough to tempt every continental power into projecting influence, and far enough that distance corrodes orders, allegiances, and truths in transit. Its islands host trade hubs, contested ports, colonial administrations, communities much older than the crowns that claim them, and Éterlumin sources whose extraction is reshaping every map that touches the region. Read the full page: https://www.mar-de-oro.com/world ================================================================ Title: System-neutral adaptation URL: https://www.mar-de-oro.com/codex/system-neutral-adaptation Section: Core concept Audience: Everyone Spoilers: Light ================================================================ Mar de Oro is system-neutral. It does not depend on classes, levels, spell lists, or one dice system. The System-Neutral Adaptation chapter walks a GM through adapting the setting to any ruleset: pick a resolution engine, decide how magical Éterlumin should feel at the table, decide firearm lethality, decide moon-night severity, and translate factions and hazards. It includes a printable Adaptation Worksheet. Optional per-system conversion pages are clearly labelled and do not overwrite the system-neutral canon. Read the full page: https://www.mar-de-oro.com/codex/system-neutral-adaptation ================================================================ Title: Optional 2d6 Resolution Bridge URL: https://www.mar-de-oro.com/codex/system-conversions/2d6-bridge Section: Core concept Audience: Everyone Spoilers: Light ================================================================ The 2d6 Resolution Bridge is an optional, lightweight resolution engine included on the site. It requires no separate rulebook. Groups that already own a preferred TTRPG system may keep using it; groups that want something small, fast, and immediately playable can use the Bridge as-is. The Eldest Authority. The House That Held the Center. Valdegracia is the oldest continental power, where crown, church, and noble houses have grown so thoroughly entangled that legitimacy itself has become a family argument carried on in cathedral corridors and cedar-scented archives. Political order: Monarchy with a strong centralized government, the Emperor holding significant authority and advised by the church. Deep-rooted religious ties and a complex political structure emphasize the unity and stability of the empire alongside its cultural and scientific ambitions. Religion: Dominated by the Solarian Church, which plays a significant role in both governance and daily life. Capital: Santa Dominica de la Mar Language: Valderian Explore the complete nation dossier: https://www.mar-de-oro.com/nations/valdegracia ================================================================ Title: Albion URL: https://www.mar-de-oro.com/nations/albion Section: Nation dossier Audience: Everyone Spoilers: Light ================================================================ Tenor: The Old Kingdom. The Naval Crown. The Power That Built an Empire Before Anyone Agreed to Let It. Albion is a maritime kingdom of ancient habit and naval genius, built on commercial calculation, quiet intelligence, and the settled confidence of a crown that believes civilization has a shape and Albion lies near its center. Political order: Constitutional monarchy. The King retains significant power but must consult with Parliament on key decisions, particularly those affecting domestic affairs and legislation, balancing royal authority with democratic governance. Religion: Predominantly follows the Luminary Fellowship, emphasizing individual enlightenment and a personal connection to the divine. Capital: Regalport Language: Albionic Explore the complete nation dossier: https://www.mar-de-oro.com/nations/albion ================================================================ Title: Stroomdijk URL: https://www.mar-de-oro.com/nations/stroomdijk Section: Nation dossier Audience: Everyone Spoilers: Light ================================================================ Tenor: The Chartered Kingdom. The Empire of Ledgers. The State That Understood What Sovereignty Really Costs. Stroomdijk is a parliamentary monarchy reborn from commercial revolt, whose real power lives in the Wisselbank, the great chartered companies, and a Directorate so deliberately unreadable that no foreign ambassador can predict its next move. Political order: Parliamentary monarchy in which Parliament holds full power on the continent. The King, however, exercises considerable autonomy in the colonies, often governing them with a free hand. Religion: Also follows the Luminary Fellowship, with a strong emphasis on trade ethics and community service. Capital: Havenwijk Language: Stroomish Explore the complete nation dossier: https://www.mar-de-oro.com/nations/stroomdijk ================================================================ Title: Luminore URL: https://www.mar-de-oro.com/nations/luminore Section: Nation dossier Audience: Everyone Spoilers: Light ================================================================ Tagline: The republic is the faith. The faith is the republic. This is not a confusion. Luminore is a Solarian republic organised around the conviction that republic and faith are not competing claims, but expressions of one underlying order. The Solarian faith is genuine and publicly practised through cathedral life, feast days, civic custom, and personal devotion. Faith and government are constitutionally bounded, mutually respectful, and never fully merged. The elected Conseil Civique handles secular matters. The cathedral handles sacred ones. A Luminoran is expected to be fluent in both registers. Luminore is the continent’s intellectual centre. Literacy is treated as a civic virtue, the press as a civic institution, and the university as the place where unresolved questions are tested through evidence and argument. Open disagreement is expected: a Luminoran states the disagreement, explains why, and expects the other person to do the same. Class remains real but subject to interrogation. An old aristocracy exists in continuing tension with an educated middling class of lawyers, physicians, printers, and natural philosophers. Common birth is not destiny when a person is literate. The characteristic Luminoran habit is the citation. Claims should have sources, arguments should withstand examination, and authority should be prepared to explain itself. The Velasian Tradition. The Kingdom That Believed in Order as a Form of Devotion. Eisenmark is the disciplined state of the Velasian school, where order is treated as a form of devotion and military, engineering, and theological method share a deep reverence for exactness. Political order: Mostly landlocked but highly militaristic state with a small coastline giving limited access to the sea. A mixed government system grants significant regional autonomy, balancing the imperial authority of the Emperor with the administrative power of the Chancellery. Religion: A diverse religious landscape, with significant populations adhering to the Solarian Church, the Luminary Fellowship, and the Oraclean Communion. Capital: Stahlstadt Language: Eisen Explore the complete nation dossier: https://www.mar-de-oro.com/nations/eisenmark ================================================================ Title: Volkharov URL: https://www.mar-de-oro.com/nations/volkharov Section: Nation dossier Audience: Everyone Spoilers: Light ================================================================ Tenor: The Interior Empire. The Enduring State. The Nation That Has Survived What Others Cannot Imagine. Volkharov is an interior empire defined by vyderzhka, the cultivated art of outlasting what breaks other nations, bound to the Oraclean Communion and expanding slowly overland across distances that would exhaust any other power. Political order: Monarchy with a strong central authority vested in the royal family. The state maintains strict control over its territories, emphasizing military strength and national unity. Religion: Predominantly follows the Oraclean Communion, with a focus on rituals, prophecy, and a structured clergy. Capital: Zarovsk Language: Volkharian Explore the complete nation dossier: https://www.mar-de-oro.com/nations/volkharov ================================================================ Title: Republic of Éirighdún URL: https://www.mar-de-oro.com/nations/republic-of-eirighdun Section: Nation dossier Audience: Everyone Spoilers: Light ================================================================ Tenor: The Island Republic. The Convenient Friend. The Nation That Has Always Had Strong Opinions About Conflicts It Never Joins. Éirighdún is a neutral island republic of clans, harbors, and Éterlumin deposits, whose neutrality survives because every major power owes it money and prefers commerce to conquest. Political order: A fiercely independent republic of rugged highlands and storm-lashed coasts. Governed by an elected High Council of Clanns, it blends ancient tribal traditions with modern representative politics. A modest but highly disciplined defensive force and citizen militias ensure no foreign power can dictate its fate. Its independence is underwritten by a treaty with Luminore and Valdegracia, whose diplomatic guarantees and naval presence have deterred Albion's ambitions for decades. Religion: The Solarian Church holds the majority, particularly in the southern and western counties, but the Luminary Fellowship is influential in trade towns and the coastal cities. The two faiths coexist uneasily, and politics often runs along religious lines. The Three Founders. The Colony That Decided What It Was Before Anyone Told It. The Duchy of Heller is the autonomous Valdegracian colonial territory, governed by Dux Hernanus Costesius de Heller and Dux Franciscus Perezzi. Its flag carries two gold dragons and the silver dragon of the presumed-dead Generalis Costilas. The Duchy owes Valdegracia military allegiance in time of war. In all other matters, it governs itself. Mar de Oro is a scatter of islands, but "scatter" understates the complexity. It is a web of routes, anchorages, reefs, plantations, coves, signal heights, mission stations, customs houses, taverns, shrines, hidden inlets, jungle interiors, and settlements that can become strategic overnight when rumor changes direction. It is the grammar of public life. The Codex shapes law, festival, burial, kingship, conscience, rhetoric, marriage, and the ordinary expectations by which communities measure one another. Even those who reject religious authority tend to speak its inherited language. One may despise bishops and still think in terms of sin, grace, mercy, corruption, witness, and judgment because the culture has been built in that grammar for centuries. The world sorts them into traditions and then mistakes those traditions for separate realities. They are not separate realities. They are separate cultures built atop one reality. Though popular imagination attaches it most strongly to Umbra and to moral corruption, lived experience teaches that the curse is also physical, cyclical, hereditary in some cases, and socially ruinous in ways theology alone does not explain. Families hide it. Priests condemn it, manage it, or exploit it. Physicians attempt to classify it. Neighbors whisper. Some communities develop practical kindness. Others develop only fear refined into procedure. Not a set of numbers, but a person. Someone who grew up somewhere, believes something, wants something, and has already made at least one choice they cannot entirely take back. The questions in this chapter are not character sheet prompts. They are the questions you ask when you want to know who someone actually is. A character in the world of Aeon is not assembled from parts. It is the architecture of assumption that grew up around you before you had the words to name it, the way your household understood debt and obligation, the posture you learned for speaking to a priest, the distance you kept from strangers on a road, the first thing you noticed when something went wrong. By the time you are old enough to leave a place, it has already left its mark on you. … Subjects covered: - Formation, not choice - Valdegracia, the weight of heaven - Albion, we do not say what we mean - Stroomdijk, everything has a price - Luminore, the republic is the faith - Duchy of Heller, what we built, we built ourselves The full page includes illustrations and additional reference material. Not your name. Not your nation. Not even your faith, though that will come second. What are you, what is your calling, the thing that explains your presence in this place, the framework that makes you legible to whoever is asking? A calling is not a skill. Skills can be learned piecemeal; a calling is a full inhabitation. I seek justice is an idea. I want to restore my family's honor is an idea. Ideas are weightless; they can be stated in a sentence and filed away and retrieved intact whenever the plot requires them, unchanged by what happened in the interim. A bond is different. A bond is a person, a specific person with a face and a history and a particular way of sitting at a table, whose claim on you is not abstract. You do not owe justice in general; you owe it to Marta, who was there when the verdict came down, who looked at you in the specific way she looked at you, and whose expression you have not been able to stop seeing. … Subjects covered: - Bonds and burdens: the evidence of a life - The person you owe - The person who owes you, and loyalty to something larger - When loyalties conflict, and the wound - The unexpected bond, and what a burden is - The invisible burden: the thing you did The full page includes illustrations and additional reference material. It is a community, a hierarchy, a workplace, a machine, a home, a prison, a symbol, and often the most honest portrait of a society in miniature. A frigate and an airship produce different forms of life. The frigate teaches endurance, salt, labor, hierarchy, and the long intimacy of travel at sea. The airship adds engineers, containment discipline, and the permanent awareness that the vessel remains aloft by cooperation between human discipline and a substance with no patience for bravado. For campaign play, ships are ideal because they force people into relation. … Subjects covered: - Fleet doctrine: what the powers believe about war at sea and sky - Valdegracia: Justicar and Cruzado - Albion: Banshee, Spectre, Wright, and the Ghost Squadron - The Duchy of Heller: Cazador, Santo, Aurora Ventus, Veloz, and Helios - How ships fail, and what an engagement sounds like - Working vessels of sea and sky The full page includes illustrations and additional reference material. Bills of lading, coded dispatches, manifests, relay chains, customs seals, pilot books, harbor logs, private letters, and false certifications all matter. A delayed message may alter more lives than a skirmish. Mar de Oro is a setting of communication under strain. Signals fail. Couriers vanish. Cipher keys change hands. A governor delays a dispatch for profit. A tower keeper sees too much. A sealed pouch becomes worth killing for before anyone in the crew knows what it contains. Roads flood, maps simplify, jungle closes, guides matter, local knowledge becomes precious, and weather punishes arrogance with an efficiency no villain can improve upon. The world should press back on movement. Fever, poor stores, damp bedding, bad boots, insects, broken axles, spoiled powder, mistranslation, and wrong assumptions all make excellent drama because they remind the table that the world is not made of highlights alone. The group may be privateers with a letter of marque and a talent for attracting moral ambiguity, reformers disguised as a trading concern, a church inquiry with conflicting denominational loyalties, a Hellerite survey expedition, a diplomatic escort, an anti-slavery operation, smugglers coerced into public service, or survivors of a failed voyage who now know too much to be left alone. The best openings begin in motion. The ship is already inbound. The witness is already dead. The crate is already aboard. The chart is already missing its corner. Put the crew on a dock, a deck, a relay tower, a customs stair, a chapel courtyard after burial, or a rain-swept road where the guide has stopped walking. Give them one problem practical enough to grasp in a minute and layered enough to unfold over hours. Then let the setting reveal itself through consequence rather than lecture. Let the harbour official be more afraid than he says. Let the priest know one thing too much. Let the engineer hear something wrong in the chamber before anyone else does. Let the local pilot refuse extra pay for one route and not explain why. Subjects covered: - Pressure, not plot The full page includes illustrations and additional reference material. The conversion notes are considered recommendations for building Fortera, Éterlumin, the Callings, and the weight of Bonds and Burdens out of the tools three widely played systems already give a table: Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition, Pathfinder Second Edition, and Blades in the Dark (and its Forged in the Dark relatives).
