Free browser applications
Interactive Tools
Mar de Oro provides four free browser-based tools for players and game masters.
The Character Builder creates a setting-grounded character in system-neutral terms. The Conversion Companion turns system-neutral characters, NPCs and creatures into editable mechanical starting points for a chosen roleplaying system. The Session Prep Builder helps a game master prepare a session and maintain its working record during play. The Airship Builder and Encounter Tracker creates a playable vessel and tracks shipboard encounters through clocks.
The tools do not form a separate game system. They support play in Mar de Oro and can be used with the tabletop roleplaying rules chosen by the group.
No account is required.
Character Builder
- Type
- Interactive, system-neutral character creation wizard
- Intended users
- Players and game masters
The Character Builder guides the user through ten steps and creates a living character dossier as choices are made.
It helps users create a character who belongs naturally within the peoples, professions, institutions and conflicts of Mar de Oro.
The user can define
- character concept
- origin
- background
- profession
- capabilities
- capability ranks
- languages
- motivations
- relationships
- obligations and complications
- other setting-specific character details
Capability ranks
The system-neutral capability ranks are:
- Familiar
- Trained
- Expert
- Master
These ranks describe competence in prose. They can later be translated into the mechanics of the user's preferred roleplaying system.
Features
- ten guided creation steps
- a living character dossier updated during creation
- progress stored locally in the browser
- no account required
- character sharing through a single link
- system-neutral output
- connection to the Conversion Companion for rules conversion
Output
A setting-grounded, system-neutral character dossier that can be used directly as a narrative reference or converted into a chosen roleplaying system.
Conversion Companion
- Type
- Experimental tabletop rules-conversion wizard
- Intended users
- Players and game masters
The Conversion Companion helps users adapt system-neutral Mar de Oro material to a chosen tabletop roleplaying system.
It provides editable mechanical starting points for characters, non-player characters and creatures. Its results are intended to be reviewed and adjusted by the user rather than treated as final or authoritative statistics.
The user can work with
- player characters
- non-player characters
- creatures
- system-neutral capabilities
- selected conversion assumptions
- mechanical values for a chosen ruleset
Features
- guided conversion workflow
- character conversion
- NPC conversion
- creature conversion
- editable mechanical output
- Markdown export
- PDF export
- DOCX export
- no account required
Output
An editable mechanical draft adapted to the chosen roleplaying system.
Important limitation
The Conversion Companion provides starting points. It does not claim that one conversion is correct for every campaign, table or interpretation of a ruleset. The user remains responsible for deciding what works for their game.
Session Prep Builder
- Type
- Interactive game-master preparation and live-session tool
- Intended users
- Game masters
The Session Prep Builder helps a game master prepare a session and keep track of it while the group plays.
It can be used before the session as a planning tool and during the session as a working record.
Before the session, the game master can prepare
- the opening hook
- a sequence of scenes
- important NPCs
- progress clocks
- danger clocks
- expected situations
- session notes
During the session
The game master can:
- keep the page open at the table
- update or tick clocks
- add notes to individual scenes
- record what the players changed
- maintain the evolving session state while typing
Features
- preparation and live-session use
- automatic local saving
- offline browser support
- no account or sign-in required
- session-file import
- printable one-page handout
- complete session PDF download
Output
A working session plan, an updated record of what occurred during play, a printable one-page reference and a downloadable full-session PDF.
Access note
The phrase "Restricted · For the Game Master" means that the page contains game-master-facing information. It does not imply that the tool requires payment, registration or special technical access.
Airship Builder and Encounter Tracker
- Type
- Interactive airship creation and encounter tracking tool
- Intended users
- Players and game masters
This tool helps players and Game Masters create an airship, understand how it functions as a playable vessel, and track what happens during pursuits, battles, boarding actions, escapes, and other shipboard encounters.
Each ship is treated much like a character. It has a purpose, strengths, weaknesses, important systems, crew positions, and changing conditions. Players can see what their ship is capable of, which parts of it are under pressure, and where their characters can make a difference.
The ship does not simply lose abstract hit points. Its guns may be silenced, lift may become unstable, fires may spread, crew may be lost, or damaged machinery may force characters to leave their posts and intervene. These consequences create places to go, problems to solve, and decisions to make aboard the vessel.
Encounters are tracked through clocks. A clock may represent gaining a firing position, closing for boarding, escaping into cloud, losing lift, containing a fire, repairing the rudder, breaking the enemy's formation, or completing another developing objective.
More than one ship can be tracked at once, and each is designated as player, ally, or enemy. This lets a Game Master hold a whole engagement in view: the party's vessel, the friendly ship beside it, and the enemies closing in, each with its own systems and clocks.
The tool does not roll dice, determine success, resolve attacks, or replace the rules of the game being played. Players use their normal game system to take actions and determine outcomes. The resulting changes are then recorded through the ship's systems, conditions, and clocks.
This creates a shared visual record of the encounter. Everyone can understand what is happening, which dangers are growing, and what the opposing ship is attempting.
The purpose of the tool is to make the airship an active part of the adventure rather than a static vehicle or background map. Players can command batteries, repair machinery, adjust lift and trim, rally the crew, treat casualties, repel boarders, pursue an enemy, or attempt desperate manoeuvres while the situation continues to change around them.
The user can define
- ship name
- ship type
- allegiance as player, ally or enemy
- scale
- systems and crew positions
- clocks for developing objectives and dangers
- conditions and consequences during an encounter
- a signature manoeuvre
Features
- airship creation in the shipwright
- several ships tracked at once
- player, ally and enemy designations
- clocks for objectives, dangers and repairs
- system and condition readouts
- ship sheet PDF and DOCX export
- save and resume an engagement
- no account required
Output
A playable airship sheet and a shared visual record of an ongoing encounter, exportable as a ship sheet in PDF or DOCX.
Important limitation
The tool does not roll dice, determine success, resolve attacks, or replace the rules of the game being played. Outcomes come from the group's own roleplaying system and are then recorded here.
From Character to Session
The four applications support different stages of play.
The Character Builder creates a person in system-neutral Mar de Oro terms.
The Conversion Companion translates characters, NPCs or creatures into editable mechanical starting points for a selected roleplaying system.
The Session Prep Builder helps the game master prepare and run an actual session.
The Airship Builder and Encounter Tracker turns a vessel into a playable part of the adventure and tracks what happens to it during an encounter.
A user may use any of the tools independently. The tools complement one another, but none is required to operate another unless the interface explicitly states otherwise.
Related guidance, not tools
The System-Neutral Adaptation framework is an explanatory guidance page rather than an interactive application, and the Setting Guide and other downloads are books and PDFs. Only the four applications above are interactive tools.
