Source Chambers and Rupturum Events

A rupture is not an accident. It is an answer.

A rupturum event is what happens when a source chamber is pushed past its management threshold. The threshold is not a fixed value. It depends on the current Fortera geometry, the lunar phase, the amount of Éterlumin recently extracted from the chamber's feed zone, the temperature of the substrate, and whether anyone has been conducting resonance experiments in the vicinity. The engineers call it unpredictable. It is not unpredictable. It is complex.

The rupture scale

SeverityRadiusDurationEffectsAftermath
Minor10 mSecondsWarmth, luminous pulse, compass deviation, mild Fortera draw on nearby workings.Self-resolving. Chamber settles within hours. Workers note it in the log.
Moderate40 mMinutesHeat, sustained luminosity, Fortera workings respond without direction, minor structural resonance.Chamber needs 1d4 days to restabilize. Authorities may investigate.
Major100 mHoursDangerous heat, uncontrolled Fortera expressions, structural damage, casualties possible.Chamber may not restabilize without intervention. Regional effects on supply.
Severe300 mDaysMass Fortera working events, structural collapse, evacuation required.Chamber likely compromised permanently. Major political and economic consequences.
CatastrophicIsland region or fleet actionCampaign changingImpossible geography, chained ship losses, wide resonance scars, old systems waking elsewhere.Campaign-changing event, war pretext, theological crisis, new age begins.

Running a chamber scene

The best chamber scenes are solved through observation, choice, and cost. Let players notice patterns before they understand them. The chamber repeats sound after six heartbeats. A brass tool grows warm only when pointed east. A prayer brightens the light, but an engineer's tapped rhythm makes it settle.

Reward players who experiment carefully. Punish speed, arrogance, and violence in proportion to warning. If they shoot a valve after seeing it sing for ten minutes, the rupture is earned. If they slow the room, remove heat, stop a pulse, or break a repeated pattern, give them a way to survive even if they cannot fix the whole system.
