Session objectives

One direction per session, what success changes, what delay costs.

What it is

An objective is not a plot. It is the answer to two questions: what does the world look like if the party succeeds and what changes if they do nothing. Both answers should be concrete, visible in the fiction, and small enough to be resolved in a single session.

A well-written objective removes the pressure to steer. The players know what is at stake, the Game Master knows what changes with delay or refusal, and the table has a shared spine to return to when a scene wanders.

Keep it to a single sentence. If it needs a paragraph, it is two objectives.

When to use it

  • At the top of prep, every session gets exactly one primary objective.
  • When the party is drifting mid-session and you need to reintroduce stakes.
  • When you feel yourself improvising a hard turn, check the objective before you invent a new one.
  • During end-of-session updates, to score whether the objective moved forward, sideways, or backward.

Worked example

San Telmo, Session 4
Objective

Reach the refinery foreman before the Justicar's convoy does, and decide whether he leaves the plantation alive.

If they succeed

The Justicar loses her only witness. The Shadowed Tide gains a debt they cannot yet name.

If they delay

The foreman is taken at dawn. The Albion identifies the asset clock advances two segments. Their next port of call is watched.

Pairs with

Clocks

Mar de Oro GM Tools

This is the Game Master tool area for Tales of Mar de Oro: session preparation aids, pacing and consequence helpers, clocks, and reference generators you can use at the table. The tools themselves are system-neutral utilities, and they sit alongside campaign material written for the person behind the screen.

Campaign spoiler warning: the material past this point includes faction secrets, hidden truths, and the sequence of events behind the campaign. Reading it as a player will hollow out surprises the setting depends on.

Spoiler-free GM resources you can open without entering: Mar de Oro GM Tables and new Game Master onboarding.
