Consequence planning

Prepare the world's reactions before the dice fall.

What it is

Consequence planning means deciding in advance how the situation will change if the party fails, delays, uses excessive force, or simply looks elsewhere. The point is not to punish them. The point is to keep the campaign moving with consequences that are visible, directional, and specific.

A prepared consequence is easier to deliver cleanly than an improvised one. It lands faster, feels fairer, and usually reveals more of the world because it comes from the pressure already on the table.

If you prepare just four responses for a scene, failure, delay, violence, ignored, you can run almost anything the players throw at you without freezing the session.

When to use it

  • During prep for any objective scene where the players may miss, stall, or turn brutal.
  • When you know a mission matters and want failure to redirect rather than dead-end.
  • Before infiltration, negotiation, rescue, or escort sessions where multiple approaches are likely.
  • At the end of prep, as a final check that the world will still move if the party does not cooperate.

Worked example

Warehouse rescue · prepared consequence grid
Failure

The captives are moved before the breach. One terrified witness remains behind with a partial description of the convoy route.

Delay

The convoy departs under rain cover. The party still gets inside, but the rescue becomes a pursuit and the route clock advances.

Violence

Public bloodshed weakens the legal case and brings militia reinforcements. The rescue succeeds, but the city now names the party as armed agitators.

Ignored

The Shadowed Tide attempts the rescue alone. If it works, they own the witnesses; if it fails, the harbor fills with reprisals.

Mar de Oro GM Tools

This is the Game Master tool area for Tales of Mar de Oro: session preparation aids, pacing and consequence helpers, clocks, and reference generators you can use at the table. The tools themselves are system-neutral utilities, and they sit alongside campaign material written for the person behind the screen.

Campaign spoiler warning: the material past this point includes faction secrets, hidden truths, and the sequence of events behind the campaign. Reading it as a player will hollow out surprises the setting depends on.

Spoiler-free GM resources you can open without entering: Mar de Oro GM Tables and new Game Master onboarding.
