Scene spine

A flexible session backbone that gives shape without forcing decisions.

What it is

A scene spine is not a script and not a list of mandatory scenes. It is a five-function structure that helps a session keep momentum: something disrupts the status quo, the party makes a first meaningful decision, the world opens through movement or investigation, pressure escalates, and the session lands in a climax with consequence.

Each function can be a single scene, half a scene, or several scenes. The point is not order for its own sake. The point is that every session changes something, asks something of the players, and closes with an outcome that matters next time.

If the players skip a path entirely, do not force it back in. Let the remaining functions absorb the pressure. A good spine bends.

When to use it

  • At the start of prep, when you know the pressure but not yet the exact scenes.
  • When sessions sprawl into disconnected encounters and you need clearer momentum.
  • When you want an investigation or travel session to still end with consequence.
  • When you need a reliable shape for convention play, one-shots, or short arcs.

Worked example

Harbor investigation session
Opening disruption

A body washes ashore with refinery ash under the fingernails and a Heller customs tag sewn into the coat.

First decision

Chase the vanished barge manifest, or question the harbor crew before Albion officers arrive.

Investigation or movement

Search the fog docks, bribe a signalman, and follow the false registry trail toward the warehouse quarter.

Escalation or reversal

The suspect flees into a loading crane maze just as a planted witness accuses the party of the murder in public.

Climax and consequence

The party corners the courier and learns the body was meant to be found. They can expose the refinery ledger now and burn an ally, or hold it back and let the convoy sail under watch.

Mar de Oro GM Tools

This is the Game Master tool area for Tales of Mar de Oro: session preparation aids, pacing and consequence helpers, clocks, and reference generators you can use at the table. The tools themselves are system-neutral utilities, and they sit alongside campaign material written for the person behind the screen.

Campaign spoiler warning: the material past this point includes faction secrets, hidden truths, and the sequence of events behind the campaign. Reading it as a player will hollow out surprises the setting depends on.

Spoiler-free GM resources you can open without entering: Mar de Oro GM Tables and new Game Master onboarding.
