Chapter XV

Act VIII — The Price of Fortune

The characters decide what becomes law, scandal, secret, or war.

Running This Act

GM Goal
Convert everything the characters have done into political, human, legal, military, and Source consequences.
What Must Surface
There is no neutral handoff. Control of people, proof, access, the Ear, the Source, publication, and secrecy creates a new regional order.
Keep Pressure Moving
Every surviving faction still capable of acting retains a final interest, demand, or move.
Active Clocks
  • Negotiations Collapse — the summit can still become a blockade, seizure, or standoff.
  • Albion Delegation Loses Control — captured orders split the delegation in public.
  • The Clann Withdraw Trust — publishing the route makes them active opposition.
  • Unresolved faction clocks: show a meaningful pending off-screen consequence supported by a surviving faction’s position and credible action. Progress a clock only when its established trigger warrants it; completion is not required. Preserve earned victories.
Likely Faction Moves
  • Lysander disavows the field command or defends it and accepts the consequences.
  • Stroomdijk buys silence, sacrifices an intermediary, or contests the ledgers' provenance.
  • The crown claims custody of the proof, the people, and the official record.
  • Montoya presses for an inquiry only if the evidence can survive one.
Move On When
Safety, proof, access, custody, publication or concealment, and at least one immediate consequence have been resolved.

GM at the Table
  • Resolve custody of people before custody of objects.
  • Let each character make one final public or private move.
  • Show a meaningful pending faction consequence inside the scene, grounded in established position and credible off-screen action. Change clock progress only when its trigger warrants it; do not manufacture completion.
  • Preserve player victories. Do not resurrect a removed NPC or recreate a destroyed object to restore an expected ending.
  • Judge the result by safety, proof, access, and the responsibility the characters accept for what comes next.

Required truths, not required scenes. When a player choice removes a default assumption, use When the Expected Route Breaks

The final battle is over what the world is allowed to call true.

Return to the Table

The summit may still be functioning, may have become an emergency inquiry, or may exist only as armed delegations in separate buildings. Preserve the structure: every faction demands custody, every witness needs protection, and every piece of proof creates a route back toward the Source.

The Final Questions

  • Who is safe now, and whose safety is being traded away?
  • Who controls the proof, and can that proof survive the people who own the presses, courts, and ships?
  • Who controls access to the Source, and what prevents that control from becoming extraction?
  • What happens to the Ear, its copies, and everyone who understands part of it?
  • What truth about Albion’s delegation, Albion Covert Command, Stroomdijk, the Project Custodian, Vega, Melenko or the Legacy Anchor, or the Clann becomes public?
  • What consequence appears before the final scene ends?

    Ending Procedure

  • List every faction still able to act openly.
  • Let each character make one final public or private move.
  • Resolve custody of people before custody of objects.
  • Resolve publication, concealment, destruction, or fragmentation of proof.
  • Review surviving factions’ positions and credible pending actions, including those left unattended. Show the consequence that follows: a ship departing, a warrant posted, a press running, a village gate opening, or a moon rising over Vega’s deck. Progress a clock only when its established trigger occurs; do not force completion or undo a player-earned victory to manufacture an ending.
  • Ending Rule

There is no single best ending. Judge the result by safety, proof, access, and the responsibility the characters accept for what comes next.
